I have never signed up for a Presidential candidate's email list before, but I felt compelled to enter in my information for Barack Obama recently. While I haven't fully decided if he's my choice, I'm intrigued by his marketing approach and think if there's anyone that truly gets how to sell themselves and their message via the interactive world, it's him.
I was scanning through my inbox the other day and came across an email from David Plouffe, BarackObama.com with the subject line, Dinner with Barack? It could have been the time of day or the mood I was in, but I was genuinely intrigued. Upon opening, it was a push to raise funds with two new donators being asked to join Obama for an intimate dinner for five people. Subsequent requests were listed as from Obama himself with a subject line of Dinner invitation. By using what could be considered traditional one-to-one email language, the Obama campaign created an engaging subject line that was more inviting than salesman-like.
The takeaway: even if your subject is running for the highest office in the country, you can make it seem like that office is right next door to you.
