There's nothing quite like a strangely-named charity, is there? In my inbox today was an email from Major League Soccer with the subject line: "A Letter From MLS Commissioner Don Garber - World Malaria Day", which I thought was strange for two reasons:
1) World Malaria Day? Wouldn't World Malaria Awareness Day be more appropriate? The former sounds like we're celebrating the disease rather than making people aware of the consequences.
2) "A Letter From..."? Really? We're not past this yet as marketers? I'm not sure why putting "A Letter From..." is more powerful than "MLS Commish urges fans to be part of World Malaria Day". It's not the 80s anymore and plus, it's an email.
So on top of the oddly named charity (not their fault) and the strange subject line (definitely their fault) comes the best part of all: the picture of Don Garber himself. Looking more like a dictator than a friendly person impassionately trying to get his fanbase to become involved, this isn't exactly the warm and fuzzy image that'll prompt me to get involved. If he was insistent on including his picture, there wasn't a better image to use? The podium point was it? Oooooookay.
