Holy $&%@.
That was the first words out of my mouth when I got a marketing email from rocker Tommy Lee's website the other day. I can't remember when I signed up, but I guess it's always good to keep track of the guy who banged the drums on such classics as Home Sweet Home, Dr. Feelgood and Girls, Girls, Girls.
Lee claims he has the 'best artist web site in the world,' which is code for 'a lot of Flash, flashy graphics and widgets thrown onto a page'. That equation doesn't equal a good looking and functional site, nor does it mean effective emails. Unfortunately, Lee's marketing/interactive group has taken the time-honored but not-so-true form of throwing everything currently on their site into their emails. It's overwhelming, full of stuff that would get caught like a stone through a spam filter and bizarrely intriguing in the same breath.
See if you can tell the difference betwen the site and the email. After you click on them, it might take a minute for them to load...they are truly that bleepin' big.

Still with me? Example 2:

Yikes. Do I have to explain the issues? Also, I must mentioned the email is entitled Monday Mayhem, yet I've consistently got it on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. I think I'm going to pop in Decade of Decadence and call it a day.
